Getting Started with MetaTrader 4
MetaTrader 4 (MT4) is the world's most widely used retail forex trading platform. Whether you're opening your first demo account or setting up a live trading environment, getting MT4 installed correctly is your first critical step. This guide walks you through the entire process from download to first login.
Step 1: Download MT4 from Your Broker
MT4 is distributed by individual forex brokers — there is no single universal download. Here's how to get the right version:
- Visit your broker's official website.
- Navigate to the Platforms or Download section.
- Select MetaTrader 4 (not MT5) for your operating system.
- Click the download link and save the installer file.
Important: Always download MT4 directly from your broker's official site to avoid tampered or malicious versions.
Step 2: Install on Windows
- Locate the downloaded
.exeinstaller file (usually in your Downloads folder). - Double-click the file and click Yes on the User Account Control prompt.
- Accept the license agreement and click Next.
- Choose your installation directory (the default is fine for most users).
- Click Install and wait for the process to complete.
- Click Finish — MT4 will launch automatically.
Step 3: Install on Mac
MT4 doesn't have a native Mac application, but you have two reliable options:
- Use Wine or CrossOver: These compatibility layers allow you to run the Windows version of MT4 on macOS.
- Use a Virtual Machine: Install Windows via Parallels or VMware Fusion and run MT4 inside it.
- Use the Web Trader: Many brokers offer a browser-based MT4 Web Terminal as an alternative.
Step 4: Log In to Your Account
Once MT4 opens for the first time, you'll need to connect it to your trading account:
- Go to File → Login to Trade Account.
- Enter your Account Number (provided by your broker).
- Enter your Password.
- Select the correct Server from the dropdown (your broker will specify this).
- Check Save account information if you want to stay logged in.
- Click Login.
Step 5: Open a Demo Account (Recommended for Beginners)
If you don't yet have a live account, MT4 lets you open a demo account directly:
- Go to File → Open an Account.
- Select your broker from the list and click Next.
- Fill in your personal details and select New demo account.
- Choose your deposit amount and leverage settings.
- Click Next to receive your demo login credentials.
Understanding the MT4 Interface
After logging in, you'll see the default MT4 layout with four key areas:
- Market Watch: Live bid/ask prices for all available instruments.
- Navigator: Access to accounts, indicators, expert advisors, and scripts.
- Chart Area: The main workspace where price charts are displayed.
- Terminal: Shows open trades, account history, alerts, and news.
What to Do Next
With MT4 installed and running, your next steps should be to explore chart types, add currency pairs to your Market Watch, and familiarise yourself with placing orders. Practice on a demo account before committing real capital — it's the safest way to learn the platform inside out.
